An exciting opportunity has arisen within NSW Fair Trading Rental Branch for a Portfolio Manager.

Be Part of the Future of Fair Trading

NSW Fair Trading is working to ensure safe marketplaces for goods, services, and homes in NSW.

At NSW Fair Trading, we've been on an exciting journey of transformation, reimagining how we deliver for the people and communities of NSW. Through our recent organizational realignment, we've built a new operating model designed to put customers at the center of everything we do, strengthen our regulatory impact, and enable our people to thrive.

We're creating a more modern, responsive, and risk-based Fair Trading - one that understands the needs of people and businesses, embraces collaboration and innovation, and delivers better outcomes across the rental, strata, property, and consumer markets we serve.

This next phase brings new and exciting opportunities to join us in shaping "the new way" - where you can help design smarter regulation, improve customer experiences, and make a real difference for the people of NSW.

If you're someone who:

  • Thinks deeply about the needs of people and communities
  • Is motivated by great outcomes, not just processes
  • Wants to be part of an organization that's transforming how consumer protection regulation works

...then there's a place for you in our future. Join us as we build a Fair Trading that's fit for the future - one that's customer-centered, evidence-driven, and proudly focused on public value.

About the Team

This role sits within NSW Fair Trading's Rental Branch. The team is responsible for designing and implementing specialized rental initiatives that improve outcomes for renters, property providers, and the broader rental market aligned with Government priorities and emerging issues.

About the Role

The Manager Portfolio (Projects) sits within the Renting and Financial Services Directorate at NSW Fair Trading, operating as a dedicated delivery partner for the branch's project priorities.

This role provides the rental branch with hands-on analytical and delivery capacity. Rather than a coordination or project management function, it's an embedded capability that helps teams deliver the substantive work - building the evidence base, developing technical outputs, and creating the foundations for decision-making across high-profile initiatives. At any given time, you'll lead a team contributing across a large number of concurrent portfolio projects spanning the branch, and where priorities demand, across Fair Trading more broadly.

That means you'll need to be as comfortable moving between workstreams as you are going deep on a single deliverable - bringing the same rigor and quality to a ministerial briefing as to a financial model or policy framework. You'll also lead a small team and manage through change, balancing your own direct contribution with the people leadership the role requires.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the management and delivery of a portfolio of projects in the rental sector to ensure implementation of strategic and operational outcomes.
  • Provide strategic advice, guidance, and governance support to project sponsors and stakeholders.
  • Monitor performance, risks, and interdependencies across the portfolio and implement appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate collaboration and successful implementation.
  • Lead reporting, analysis, and continuous improvement to strengthen portfolio management capability.

About You

We are seeking a results-driven and strategic professional who:

  • Has experience managing complex portfolios or programs within large organizations.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership, planning, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Possesses sound knowledge of project and portfolio management methodologies.
  • Excels at influencing, problem-solving, and managing competing priorities.
  • Holds tertiary qualifications and/or experience in project management, community development, governance, business, or a related field.

When Applying

Provide a cover letter (maximum 2 pages) and resume (maximum 5 pages) that outline your experience and how you meet the role's key capabilities.

Salary Grade 11/12, with the base salary for this role starting at $149,739 base plus superannuation
