A Journey from Technical Management to Project Management with IPM

Introduction

After years of managing technical projects in the healthcare sector and working closely with doctors, nurses, and patients, I began to feel the strain of balancing responsibilities. The work often felt overwhelming, and the pressure of urgent projects started to decrease my passion. Recognising a need for change, I transitioned from a purely technical role manager to project management, eager to learn the principles and theory behind it. This shift led me to a valuable opportunity: volunteering with IPM (Institute of Project Management), an organisation that has become instrumental in my growth as a project manager.

Main Experience

Volunteering with IPM has been an incredible and rewarding experience for me. Joining a fast-paced environment and contributing to multiple projects at once has enriched my skills and broadened my understanding of project management in ways I hadn't anticipated. IPM provided not only the environment but also the guidance needed to develop essential project management skills, and I quickly found myself immersed in the "real-world" application of project management principles.

At IPM, I was able to collaborate with diverse teams, experience the latest project management tools, and observe the true spirit of teamwork and collaboration. The transition from technical to project management was not without its challenges; managing projects in healthcare is uniquely demanding, especially when balancing stakeholder expectations in a high-pressure environment. Yet, this experience has made me realise the value of structured project management, where the combination of theory and practical experience is transformative.

IPM has provided me the opportunity to sharpen my leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, all while leading numerous projects. Engaging with IPM's supportive leaders and team members has allowed me to cultivate various interpersonal skills and connect with like-minded professionals. This transition has brought new energy to my career, allowing me to realise that success is possible in any new field with the right mentorship and environment.

Conclusion

Initially, my goal with IPM was straightforward: to prepare for the project management certification. But as I became more involved, my ambition expanded. Beyond the certification, IPM has helped me organise my work, refine my approach, and build confidence in my abilities. This experience has strengthened my belief that I can manage any project and reach new heights in my career with the right skills and mindset.

Reflecting on my journey, I'm immensely grateful to everyone at IPM, from the CEO to each team member, for their unwavering support.

For anyone considering a transition to project management, IPM is a powerful catalyst for change. Success begins with a decision to learn, to adapt, and to seek growth. IPM has illuminated my path, making me believe that with dedication and commitment, we can all achieve our professional aspirations. Success is near you; just believe in yourself and make the right decision!
