In the digital era, software applications and cloud services have become indispensable. However, the environmental impact of these digital innovations is often overlooked. Data centres, cloud computing, and software development processes contribute significantly to CO2 emissions. According to studies, the IT sector accounts for nearly 2-4o/of global carbon emissions—comparable to the airline industry. For example, a simple email with an attachment can generate up to 50p of CO2, and streaming a one-hour video in HD can emit over 440p of CO2.

With growing awareness about sustainability, digital project managers must integrate green practices into their workflows, ensuring that applications are built and managed with sustainability at their core. This article explores how a shift in Agile project management is needed to align with sustainability goals to create eco-friendly digital products.

How Product Owners, Project Managers and Development Teams Can Work Together

For sustainability to be a core consideration in digital app development, collaboration between product owners and development teams is crucial. Here's how both teams can work together effectively:

• Define sustainability as a product goal: Product Owners should establish sustainability as a non-functional requirement, ensuring all teams consider environmental impact during development.
• Measure and optimise carbon footprint: Development teams should integrate tools that measure energy consumption and CO2 emissions of applications and optimise accordingly.
• Cloud and infrastructure optimisation: Product Owners should work with DevOps teams to use green data centres, optimise cloud computing resources, and minimise unnecessary storage.
• Encourage sustainable coding practices: Developers should write clean, efficient code that minimises processing power and memory usage, reducing the overall energy demand of applications.

During my tenure as a Digital Delivery Manager, I prioritised collaborating with the team to design solutions that actively reduce CO2 emissions through smart product design. This included optimising user interactions with minimum clicks, enhancing page load efficiency, and implementing preen UX principles such as Dark Mode and lightweight UI components, all of which contribute to lower energy consumption. Furthermore, we tried developing a mindset that aligned with sustainability goals at every stage. As a result, one of our applications is projected to save 594.42 kWh of energy annually, reducing 255.6 tons of CO2 emissions within a year—a significant step toward sustainable digital development and a greener future.
